In the film's backstory, human societies developed flying cities, which were later on ruined by an unspecified disaster, requiring the survivors to live on the ground. The only continuing to be flying city, Laputa, still floats in the sky, hidden by a long-term powerful electrical storm that surrounds it.
In the tale's opening, an aircraft carrying Sheeta, a lady that has been abducted by Muska, an inside man benefiting the federal government, is struck by Leader Dola and also her air pirate sons that are in search of Sheeta's crystal amulet. In the resulting battle, Sheeta falls from the airship but her origin is reduced by the amulet which begins beautiful. She securely lands in a tiny mining town where she is found by a kid named Pazu, who takes her right into his home to recover. On waking, Sheeta is surprised to locate that Pazu is creating a little plane with the intent of finding the lost city of Laputa, which his daddy had taken a photo of while flying some years previously. She tells him that her family resided in a little valley to the north named Gondoa, and that she lived alone when her mother, papa, and granny passed away, up until Muska and his agents abducted her. Later on that day they are pursued by Dola's pirates, and later on by Muska's soldiers. Eventually, the two come under a deserted mine, where they come across the regional eccentric 'Uncle Pomme', that educates them that Sheeta's amulet is made of 'volucite' crystal ('Aetherium' in the American launch) a material utilized to keep Laputa as well as the other flying cities up.
